About The Department
Mathematics is a core subject for all Engineering disciplines. It serves as a valuable tool for research and development in all branches of Engineering. In today's world of rapidly advancing technolo
gy, mathematical techniques are being increasingly applied in various branches of Engineering. Numerical Analysis, Operations Research, Discrete Mathematics are a few areas currently popular with engineers and computer scientists.
The Department of Mathematics is committed to the promotion of Mathematics in all its aspects. The aim is not to merely make the student proficient in computational skills, but also to develop in him an aptitude for logical reasoning, analytical ability and precision.
The Department of Mathematics, therefore, has a unique status of its own. Established in 1983, Prof. J.N.Wartikar, eminent mathematician and former Professor of Mathematics, Government College of Engineering, Pune, was Head of the department till 1988.In August 1988, Dr.M.Y.Gokhale joined the department as Professor & Head. In the last 25 years the department has made significant contribution in teaching and research.
Research & Publications
The Head of department is a recognized guide for Ph. D students of University of Pune. Two students have completed their Ph.D, one being a faculty member Prof. Neeta Kankane. At present four students are registered for Ph.D under him.
During the last 25 years, number of research papers have been published in various national and international journals by the faculty members. Some of these papers have also been presented at various conferences in India and abroad. Two papers were presented at the 2001 international conference held at Los Angeles, California U.S.A. This conference was organized by American Society of Mechanical Engineering (ASME).
