DEPT. OF MECHANICAL ENGINEERING
The mechanical Engineering department at MIT Pune is one of the largest in terms of faculty, students and activities. Departments always continue to lead expand its activities in various directions.
- Degree offered
- BE - Mechanical Engg.
- BE - Mechanical Engg. (Sandwich Pattern)
- Duration: 4 years
- Intake: 120 seats (Mech-90 seats, Mech Sandwich-30)
- Entry requirements : 10 + 2 (H.S.C.)
Programmes & Admissions
The department offers formal degree programmes leading to B.E.(Mechanical) and B.E.(Mechanical-Sandwich) courses.
- BE (Mechanical Engineering) Regular Programme
B.E.(Mechanical)Engineering is a four years degree course consisting of 8 semesters (with 5 papers each) being conducted as prescribed by University of Pune. The course includes the various topics / subjects with which a Mechanical Engineer is concerned. The final year students are required to carry out project, which require an in-depth study in a particular topic that is chosen by a group of students (usually 3 or 4 students in a group). Some of the projects are industry sponsored.
- BE Mechanical Engineering Sandwich Course
The duration of the course is 4 years, which is the same as that of the regular degree course in Mechanical Engineering. During 5th and 8th semester students are sent to various Industries of repute for a full fledged practical training programme of 6 months duration each time.

Assesment
The course is assessed on the basis of various combinations of practical works, submission (journal work), theory and performance evaluation can be done on the basis of
- Assignments and Tests: As per the policy of Institute, tests and assignments are conducted for students in addition to their regular syllabus. Two theory assignments and one test are conducted for each subject per month. They are evaluated by the respective staff members. This helps the students for preparation of their theory examination.
- Mock tests and orals: To prepare our students for practical and oral examinations, mock (on-line) tests are conducted in the department for the subjects where there are labs associated with them. Students actually experience how there practical examinations will be conducted and can prepare accordingly. Orals are also conducted to judge the understanding of the students. Questions based on every practical assignment are also given to the students so that they get a broad idea of the nature of the questions likely be asked during the practical examinations.

Infrastructure
The department is known for
- Rapid Prototyping Centre
- Metallurgical Testing and Consultancy Centre
- Pump Testing Centre
- PUC Testing Facility
- AUTO RICSHAW & TAXI Meter Testing Facility
In addition to this the department has following newly set laboratories as:
- Robotics Laboratory
- Mechatronics Laboratory
