DEPT. OF MECHANICAL ENGINEERING
Research & Publications
The following faculty members have registered for Ph.D in Mechanical Engineering & it is expected that they will acquire Ph.D qualification within three to four years.
1. Prof. (Mrs.) S.B.Desai
- Title of research - Study of Photo-catalysis for the detoxification of drinking water
- Name of the guide - Prof. (Dr.) G.S. Tasgaokar
- Introduction - Scarcity of drinking water is major concern in the developing countries. Conventional water purification methods are energy as well as cost intensive. Photo catalysis is a non selective photochemical reaction in the presence of a catalyst leading to mineralization of toxic chemicals and elimination of bacterial impurities. The study is intended to develop a test set-up and to study the parameters of the process like reactor geometry, catalyst loading, throughput time, the degradation of typical contaminants etc.
2. Prof. P.D.Sonawane
- Title of the Project - Effect of strakes on the aerodynamic characteristics of a power law body at hypersonic speeds.
- Name of the Guide - Dr. Amarjit Singh, Defence Institute of Advanced Technology, Pune.
- Introduction - Hypersonic flight is of interest today because of new vehicle concepts designed to fly at a very high Mach numbers. At very high Mach numbers, a flow field is dominated by certain physical phenomenon’s that are not so important at lower supersonic speeds. In this work , it is intended to analyze the hypersonic flow over a power - law body using Computational Fluid Dynamics approach.

Sonawane P D, Amarjit Singh, Barpande G S and Jaware V B, “Simulation and Analysis of Flow Inside a Scramjet Combustor”, 33rd National and 3rd International Conference on Fluid Mechanics and Fluid Power, Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay, Mumbai, Dec 7 – 9, 2006.
3. Prof.G.S.Barpande
- Title of research- A study of Flow inside a Scramjet for Combustor Design
- Name of Guide- Dr. Amarjit Singh, Scientist ‘F’, Defence Institute of Advanced Technology (DU) Pune
- Introduction - At hypersonic Mach numbers (above 4-5), the temperature due to intake diffusion may become excessively higher than the temperature of combustion products and sustainable metallurgical limits. Therefore combustion in supersonic stream itself is being tried. Objective is to study the design aspects related to geometry of a SCRAMJET combustor and ultimately the utility of CFD in the design process by simulating the flow fields.
4. Prof.R.K.Patil
- Title of research - Study of Thermal Energy Conservation and Pollution Reduction in Indian Cement Plants.
- Name of the Guide - Dr. S. Asthana, Sr. Scientist, NCL, Pune-8
- Introduction - India is the second largest producer of cement in the world. Cement industry is an energy intensive industry consuming about 4 GJ per tonne of cement produced. Indian cement industry has a significant potential for efficient energy management . Also there has been a growing concern about environmental issues associated with energy consumption and increased desire to achieve sustainable development . The research work will help Indian cement industry in energy conservation and pollution reduction.
