BE (Petroleum Engineering)
BE (Petroleum) is a four-year course of eight semesters (5 papers each) affiliated to the University of Pune and is accredited to the National Board of Accreditation of the AICTE, New, Delhi. It covers the syllabus that has advanced topics in Geology, Drilling, Production and Reservoir Engineering, Transport phenomena, Natural Gas Engineering, Environment and Safety Management.
-
M.E. (Petroleum Engineering) by Papers
The department also offers a post-graduate course of Master of Engineering in Petroleum Engineering (ME) affiliated to University of Pune since 1998. This Programme is aimed at developing expertise in petroleum engineering with an aptitude towards research and development work. Professionals in the industry find it useful to improve upon their academic qualifications for better prospects. It also helps graduates of other disciplines to convert themselves as petroleum engineers. The course work and dissertation work is highly demanding. Therefore candidates are advised to get acquainted with the curriculum and nature of study expected before opting for this course.
- There is no age limit for admission.
- Graduates of Petroleum / Petrochemical / Chemical / Mechanical / Production / Polymer Engineering are eligible for admission.
- Students who have qualified GATE Examination will be given preference.
- Preference will be given to graduate students of University of Pune.
- Eighteen seats are sanctioned for this course; out of which 3 seats are reserved for SC/ST category and 5 seats are reserved for students sponsored by various Institutes / Industrial Organizations.
The first and second semester of M.E. (petroleum) comprises advanced courses in Reservoir Engineering, Drilling Engineering, Production Engineering, Mathematical and Statistical Methods applicable to Petroleum Engineering, Transport Phenomena in Petroleum Engineering, Natural Gas Engineering, Environment Management and Safety Measures, Computer Applications and two elective subjects related to Petroleum Engineering. The third and fourth semester of M.E. (Petroleum) is devoted to seminars and dissertation. The students are required to deliver total three seminars (one seminar every semester for every student) starting from the second semester. Every student has to undergo training in the petroleum industry.
-
M.E. (Petroleum Engineering) by Research
The department also offers M.E. (Petroleum) degree by research for the candidates who are working in oil and gas industry for more than five years after graduation. The student admitted to M.E. (by research) will be required to appear and pass any four papers from amongst the papers for the regular M.E. course. These four papers will be decided by the guide of the candidate and shall be approved by the concerned Board of Studies and B.U.T.R of the University of Pune.

Advanced Analytical facilities
Advanced Analytical facilities are made available at the Analytical Research Laboratory by addition of Gas Chromatograph -mass Spectro-photometer (GC-MS) HP 5971 B MSD coupled with HP 5890 A Series II gas Chromatograph. The instrument is governed by HP 1034 B Software for HP MS Station (DOS Series). The equipment covers the application areas of Petroleum Exploration, Oil testing, Pesticide & Herbicide residue analysis and Hazardous waste characterization. We also have additional GC/FID unit -Chemito GC8610. Important laboratories in the Department include those for Chemical Engineering Operations, Heat Transfer, Mass Transfer, Instrumentation and Process Control, Petroleum Engineering, Petrochemical Operations, Petroleum Geo-science, Petroleum Exploration and Engineering Geology, Fluid Mechanics, Modeling and Simulation.
Departmental Library
- Students and faculty members use the Departmental Library as a ready source of information on one hand and also as a source of information for project and research work. Accordingly, the library is developed on four fronts.
- There are several popular books in different subjects. Over 70 conference proceedings (SPE, USA), copies of about 15 MS and PhD thesis published abroad, some benchmark reports in the subject and a few theses in the CD format. In addition there are B. E. project reports kept for reference.
- Books and important theses, research papers, monographs are kept in electronic format, which can be accessed by students and faculty.
- SPE International has given free access to their e – library covering more than 60,000 research papers. Password to SPE e-library is given to every student, which allows unlimited free downloading.
- SPE Image Library with 26 CD’s covering 25,000 articles are available for access
- Many faculty members have their own e-library, which is referred by students when required.
Computer and Internet Center
The Department has a separate Internet Centre with 30 computers, where computer related practicals are conducted. Students can work on their projects and also avail the facility of Internet browsing. This facility has increased the quality of presentations in Projects and Paper Presentations. Computer laboratory is shared with polymer engineering department.
The computer center has state of art software used in Petroleum Industry including Exodus Simulation, Topaze, Emeralde, and Saphir of Kappa Engineering, software of Fekete and HIS,GIS suite, Petroleum Engineering Toolkit, Hysys and Aspen….
Petroleum Engineering
Petroleum Engineering primarily deals with the search of hydrocarbons beneath the earth, their development by drilling wells and recovery. After locating reservoirs of crude oil and natural gas, petroleum engineers find ways to bring those substances out of the ground for processing. The petroleum engineer is involved in nearly all phases of the production process, from finding the oil through its refinement and distribution.
Petroleum Engineers specially trained for the purpose are therefore inevitable. Teaching of methods of petroleum refining and petrochemicals production has also been included in the curriculum by the University of Pune.
There are very few centers imparting training in this vital discipline at the graduate level in our country. In order to meet the present and future demand for trained manpower for efficient exploration of oil reserves Maharashtra Institute of Technology is conducting this four-year degree course in "Petroleum Engineering" affiliated to the University of Pune.
The Petroleum Engineering Department of the Institute has the necessary infrastructure for training in this discipline. In order to give a "feel." of the industry, a vocational training is arranged for students by Oil and Natural Gas Corporation Ltd., Oil India Ltd. and other organizations at their installations. The department has a close interaction with the petroleum industry.
In view of the increasing computer applications in the industry, special exercise involving computer applications in Exploration, Formation Evaluation and Reservoir Engineering are introduced in the curriculum. Petroleum industry is global industry. Therefore, it is vital to appraise the students of the technological and economical developments all over world also improvement in their communication skill is also necessary. The present curriculum considers this aspect also.
Students' chapter of Society of Petroleum Engineers (USA), the largest professional body of petroleum engineers, has been established in the institute. All the students from second year onwards are encouraged to become members so as to receive the facilities available to its student member’s world over. An annual Industry-Institute meet is organized in third weekend of March every year. This includes a student paper presentation contest, invited lectures and interaction of industry personnel with students. This has resulted into many award-winning performances of students at national and international conferences organized by SPE International.
The department is also actively involved in research activities pertaining to Petroleum Engineering. The department has a close interaction with the industry and a strong bond with the alumni.
