DEPT. OF PHYSICS
Physics, which is sometimes called as Natural Philosophy, is a science of matter, energy & their interaction as experienced in our universe. This 'definition' hardly represents what physics exactly means allows physics to overlap on almost every branch of science & technology. The disciplines like chemical physics, biophysics, mathematical physics, geophysics, astrophysics & engineering physics clearly indicate the all-inclusive nature of physics.
One remarkable difference between physics & other disciplines is that while other sciences try to explain a phenomenon using the principles peculiar to their own field, physics tries to explain the same phenomenon using generalized & minimum set of (or possibly using single) principles.
Throughout it's course of development physics has evolved through interlocking of theory, experiment & technology. Though many branches like thermodynamics, electronics, fluid mechanics, material science, electromagnetic engineering have branched off from physics during the course of it's evolution, physics still continues with it's original aim of understanding nature & natural phenomena.
For a technocrat or an engineer, physics in just like a 'window' through which he can observe nature in a scientific manner.
The Department runs a course of Applied Physics-I, & Applied Physics-II as the part of Applied Science at I & II. Both Applied Physics I & II have lab component where students have to perform 5 experiments in addition to few demonstrations in each semester & submit the term work. The Department has established a physics lab admeasuring 1390 sq. ft., which is well equipped with the required equipments worth Rs. 5,30,500/- (including experimental and demonstration setups), as well as a few research facilities worth Rs. 55,000/-. Department has also established a departmental library which has all required references (73 titles and 135 copies) worth Rs. 37,350/-. The applied physics courses are taught with emphasis on practical applications.
