
SPE MIDDLE EAST SUB REGIONAL STUDENT PAPER CONTEST

INTRODUCTION
SPE is pleased to invite you to participate in a Sub Regional Student Paper Contest which will be held at Maharashtra Institute of Technology, Pune. We are very excited and feel privileged to serve as hosts for this event, and we look forward to welcoming you to MIT-Pune for this competition.
This brochure is designed to provide general information about the Student Paper Contest. It includes the official Call for Papers, the preliminary program of the event and information funding and prizes.
THE CONTEST
Competitions will be held in three different categories: B.Sc., M.Sc. and Ph.D. Each School or Student Chapter may enter (2) contestants per category.
The subject of a paper must be related to petroleum engineering, which is defined as the application of basic and engineering sciences to the finding, development, and recovery of oil, gas, and other resources from wells.
The deadline for submission of abstracts is 19th September, 2008.

Announcement of Winners |
The Student Paper Contest will take place at Maharashtra Institute of Technology. Contestants must arrive 30 minutes before their Division Contest is scheduled to begin. Contestants will be asked to make a 20 minute presentation using computer projection or overhead projection. 10 minutes will be allowed for questions from the Contest Judges following the presentation. Copies of all presentations must be forwarded to SPE by 10th October. More details will be forwarded to selected contestants.
Please note that there will be no extension to the Submission Deadlines.
FUNDING & PRIZES
Entrance to the Contest is free of charge. To enter you must complete the attached entry form and send it along with your typed abstract as indicated. All applications will be reviewed and the selected candidates will be notified of their participation.
SPE assumes no obligation for expenses incurred by Contestants for travel, lodging, food or other expenses for their participation at the contest. If your paper is selected for participation, you should identify a source of funding, perhaps from the SPE Student Chapter or Section to which you are affiliated.
Certificates will be awarded to all participants in each of the three Divisions.
The 1st and 2nd place winners of each Division will be invited to give the same paper at the 2009 Middle East Regional Contest in Bahrain on 14 March 2009.
The 1st Winner from each Division of the latter contest will be invited to give the same paper at the International Contest in New Orleans-LA; USA in October 2009.
ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS
All participants must be SPE members. Only Full-time Students may participate.
Contestants who have already earned a degree must have completed their academic work for the division in which they are competing less than nine months before the contest.
The presentation/paper must not have been either accepted for publication in a peer-reviewed journal at the time of submission for the contest or presented at a previous SPE Regional Student Presentation/Paper Contest. (This provision would not preclude prior presentation at meetings such as Student Presentation/Paper Contests sponsored by schools, SPE sections, or other organizations.)

NOTES ON SUBMITTING YOUR ABSTRACT
Please complete and return the above entry form by email to mit_spe@rediffmail.com along with your abstract in word format (maximum 300 words) by 19th September, 2008
Please note that all abstracts must be submitted in English.
IMPORTANT: Please seek approval from your Institute / University to participate in the Contest and to present the proposed materials prior to submitting your abstract.
You should give a description of the proposed paper, summarizing its scope and describing any results or conclusions.
You will be notified if your abstract has been accepted or declined by 25th September, 2008
Your final paper, if selected, must not differ greatly from the abstract submitted.
Details on how to prepare your paper will be sent to selected contestants.
